The two well known compressors, WinZip and WinRar.

WinRAR easily beats out WinZip in all aspects. The main reason that WinZip is still popular is that it comes installed in new computers.

1) It compresses files better than WinZip. This is saying that it reduces the file size more than Win Zip does.
When you compress a file to a smaller size it is easier to transfer it over the Internet or even just make enough space to put it you flas drive.

2) WinRar is cheaper than Winzip. First there is a 40 days trial in which it is free to use. Then you can buy it for USD 29.00, although WinZip only costs a dollar more, all future updates to WinRAR are free for customers, but WinZIP customers have to dish out another USD 9.99 to upgrade their software. WinRAR is also worth every cent. If you want better service by WinZip and which does not even come close to WinRAR you need to dish out USD 49.99 for their PRO version. Some useful features are removed from the cheaper version so that a lot of people would try to upgrade to the PRO version.

3) WinRAR is versatile in the fact that it supports 45 languages while WinZip only supports 5 languages. Want everything in German you got it. It also supports lots of Operating Systems while WinZip is only available for Windows.WinRAR supports Windows, DOS, OS/2, Linux, FreeBSD, MacOSX and Pocket PC.

4) WinRAR supports the following formats RAR, ZIP CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZIP, ACE, UUE, BZIP2, JAR, ISO, Z, 7-ZIP and other MIME-type.
WinZip supports only RAR, ZIP, CAB, TAR, GZIP, UUE, JAR, Z, BZIP2. Now don't you think WinRAR is better than WinZip.

5) In a benchmark test by Softpedia.com Here are the results.

"WinRAR compressed the mov file to 458KB in 17 seconds at maximum compression and to 399KB in 14 seconds at normal compression. The wav was archived in 18-19 seconds to 44.9MB at maximum compression and 45.9 at normal compression. The tiff file was compressed in 47 seconds to 47.6MB

In 6 seconds, WinZip archived the same video file to 2.05MB at maximum compression and 5.59MB at normal compression in 3 seconds. Using bzip2 compression the audio file was shrunk to 59.2MB in 30 seconds for maximum compression and to 61.7MB in 9 seconds using normal compression. As for the image file, using again bzip2 compression, it was archived to 47.7MB in 27 seconds at maximum compression and in 7 seconds using normal compression."

What a huge difference in compression sizes. The only thing that WinZip shines is in its speed, but its no use having a fast compressor with poor compressing quality.

6) Do not like the current skin of WinRAR get a theme to skin it the way you like. Themes or skins are not available for WinZIP.

Now you can see that WinRAR is indeed superior to WinZip. Better function, better versatality and for cheaper as well.
