The causes of prejudice and bullying can be argued from both a biological and a sociological perspective. Biological studies have shown a tendency for the human brain to categorize elements in our world naturally, thus justifying the need to use differences as a foundation to make one element better than the other. Sociologically since the beginning of time, people organized themselves into groups based on family or tribes for security purposes, and for ensuring scarce resources to themselves, thus justifying once again the need to use differences as a foundation to put one clan above the other. In other words we would give our last morsel of bread to our brother but refuse it to our cousin in order to keep the chain of survival growing. In both cases prejudice and bullying are deeply ingrained in human nature and although difficult to diminish it's presence entirely, I'd like to argue that it's not an impossible goal to achieve!
We can't alternate our biological make up! As a human species we fall into Darwin's model, survival of the fittest. In other words let the stronger man's gene pool continue on to ensure the best survival rate! With scarce resources available, not everyone is equally eligible to meet their basic needs. Hence groups are created out of noticeable differences, may it be color, genetics, or culture as a way to reserve resources for the "best" group created. This model may have served it's purpose when hunting and gathering were the means to making a living, and surviving depended solely on hoarding food, however I'd like to argue this purpose is irrelevant in a world so interconnected to one another as information and knowledge become included in the resources available. With the increased trades in goods, knowledge and information, as humans we prosper more from overcoming racial and cultural barriers to acquire the most possible of each! In other words it's in our best interests to eliminate prejudice and bullying from our nature in order to survive. I realize however, eliminating a nature so ingrained in human origin, is not going to be that easy in relation to the sociological implications involved, however I am an optimist and propose that with effort and time it can be accomplished, especially once it's deeply ingrained that our very own survival depends on it!.
As I mentioned earlier, groups were created to ensure survival of the fittest! Along with being the "fittest," transpires prestige, power and pride,
