This is rather a complicated question. Doctors and researchers all over America will scream out, "NO! IT ISN'T SAFE FOR YOUR BABY!" But to really understand the issue you must look deeper.
First and foremost it is easily documented that heavy and excessive drinking posses a lot of dangers and risks to an unborn baby. It can cause mental impairments, grown and development issues, and even kill a baby. Often the threshold for understanding when these dangers begin is unclear. It is hard to determine how much is too much. However, most studies and articles on this topic say things like, "Just three drinks a day and you could..." or "Several drinks a week will...". Most of us don't consume three or more drinks a day, or even a week!
In addition to research showing that heavy and excessive drinking is harmful, but not showing what small amounts will do, there is the habits and practices of other cultures. It is common for European cultures to continue alcohol consumption throughout pregnancy. Many of these women cut back to a drink or two a day. However, most Europeans continue to consume alcohol on a daily bases. There are many reasons for consuming alcohol in Europe and it is looked at in a much different manner then here in the United States. Alcohol beverages are consumed with meals, and in some places even available with your McDonald's Value Meal. Pregnancies of European women who continue to drink moderate amounts of alcohol during pregnancy are no different then those who don't. Their pregnancies go well, their labor is the same, and they have healthy and happy babies.
Some European doctors even recommend that their pregnant patients consume a drink now and then. A glass of wine can be a great way to relax and to get some much needed rest. It is also a great way to enjoy a good meal, and there are several benefits to drinking a little alcohol now and then.
It is okay to have a drink here or there, but there are a few things pregnant women should remember. Getting drunk isn't a good idea, and is harmful to your baby. If it happened before you knew you were pregnant, don't dwell on it. But remember that now that you know, you shouldn't do it any more. Also remember how much alcohol is in a drink. A glass of wine or a beer is fine, and one shot of liqueur is one drink. If having a mixed drink, limit how much alcohol is in it to a single shot. A little alcohol is okay, but going overboard is dangerous. If you are worried you might go over board, order something alcohol free or virgin. These drinks can be tasty too. Stay safe and stay healthy!
