Comebacks come in many shapes and sizes, can happen in a short span of time or generations apart. In politics, a person could go from over the hill to king of the hill, to king of the compost heap in the matter of a week, particularly during primary season. Today, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama take turns having comebacks on an almost weekly basis. Everyone running in the Republican race is poised for a comeback, since everyone takes turns winning and losing (except in the case of Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich - these two would have to succeed at something before losing enough ground to merit a comeback).
In any case, anyone talking about comebacks for our presidential candidates really should wait until Election Day, as it is basically a horserace. However, I have two comebacks that I have a feeling are coming. The first is the political comeback of Al Gore.
Say it with me: President Gore. Will he announce that he's running? Not before the convention. The more we see of the Democratic contenders, the lighter and unelectable they seem. Who can take on the Repubican machine? Who can return glory to a once-proud nation? Who can deliver Southern votes? Who has experience in the White House on armed services committees and was part of the annilation of the national deficit? Who is the anti-Hillary? Who can steal red state votes? I think you see where I'm going here.
Look, as an Democrat, I love Barack Obama. He represents so many great things - hope, diversity, a different point of view. He is what's great about politics - an intelligent, experienced idealist with a backbone and a game plan. But seriously, is this country smart enough to vote for someone who's that intelligent? George W. Bush and his father had tenative grasps on the English language at best. Bill Clinton was brilliant, but dumbed down his speeches for the American people to try to keep up. And I like John Edwards, but did he deliver anything last election?
Let's put it this way - Al Gore made a mint with a film about the ENVIRONMENT! Think about that. This guy has figured out how to reach people, and when they draft him during the convention, he will probably convince a lot of delegates that he is the only choice against four more years of Republican incompetance. Do you think the 65% of Americans who disapprove of W's performance would like to make up for the 2000 election? I think so.
So, there it is - the comeback of a politician once thought for dead. A man who can bring down the deficit, clean up the environment, bring force to our military and add Barack as a vice-president. They've got my vote.
And the second comeback for 2008? Why, America, of course. Now rudderless and without hope, will take great comfort in its new found leadership. Happy New Year!
