A look at Adrian Monk's character:
Adrian Monk's character has brought a humorous look at the disorder of OCD. Though this is not a disorder to take lightly, his character has bought laughter to many who have and do not have this disorder. Monk has many other levels to his character other than just his OCD each are serious, and each carry a clue as to why he has so many difficulties in his personality.
Laughter:
It is a fact that laughter is the best medicine for people, and Adrian Monk has done a very good job of bringing laughter to many. The sessions he has with his therapist are hilarious. There never seems to be anything accomplished in their sessions. Well maybe one thing there is almost always an uncomfortable silence between them for some reason, which makes the scene that much funnier. Monk is completely set in his ways, the therapist rarely gets through to Monk, though his therapist never quits trying, even though you get the impression he would love to wash his hand of Monk and all his problems.
A sad part of his character:
Monk's character makes you laugh, but Monk also shows the pain he cannot let go of, his pain of his beloved dead wife Trudy, she has been gone for over ten years. Monk cannot let go of her and though he does refer to having OCD while she was alive, you get the idea Monk's OCD has increased since her death. There also seems to be something mysterious about her death referred to in some episodes once in awhile, like a tease so we will keep watching to find out the entire story of her untimely death.
Adrian Monk's assistant:
So far, in the series Adrian Monk has had two assistance. He is so demanding he has already lost one, it makes you wonder how long the new one will last. When he gets something foreign on his hands and she must be there to give him a wipe, it is so funny. There are many other things Monk expects and his assistant and she is very well versed as to handle most any situation, not all, but most.
Monk depends on his assistant for everything, to the point they become overwhelmed with his antics. He does not ask the assistant to do things, he tells her, and does not seem to understand she is his employee, not a wife or girl friend. It is great the way the writers t have not written a romantic relationship with his assistance into the story line. That could very possibly ruin the show.
Well rounded:
The character of Adrian Monk, with his demanding though timid personality along with his OCD and all his different, funny quirks, it is an enjoyable program. One that should be on for years to come. He is so dependent on others yet is so good at his job, this shows him as a well-rounded character. However, without all the supporting characters Adrian Monk would not work. The writers of the show have done such a good job making all his insecurities and vulnerabilities funny, yet believable very fun and funny to watch.
