My instant reaction when contemplating this question was that there was no doubt in my mind, easy answer, without question, maybe, absolutely, perhaps, I think- gosh that is a hard question.
After much inner turmoil I came to the conclusion that the best summer vacation spot is the mountains. I, myself, would try to find a destination that would have the best of both worlds. For example my favorite place in the U.S. is the Pacific Northwest. Oregon, in particular, has gorgeous beaches and spectacular mountains. But I digress, moving on to the reasons why I find the mountains to be the best summer vacation spot.
For one, you can go to the beach essentially anytime of the year. The mountains, while also a wonderful place to visit anytime, are especially magnificent in the summer months. In addition, the list of activities that are available to a mountain tourist are almost infinitum (to me anyway). One of my favorite things to do in the summer is camping, which only gets better in the mountains. Everything is better in the mountains. Whether you choose to camp or stay at a lavish mountain resort a campfire is a must. Other activities that lend themselves best to the mountains rather than the beach include hiking, fishing (in a river or lake), mountain biking, river rafting, and even downhill skiing in some places.
When I close my eyes and think of the mountains I can smell the trees and plants, hear the chirping birds, and I have the invigorating urge to go explore. I find the mountains to be inspiring and motivating. If I close my eyes and think of the beach I can smell the ocean salt, hear the waves splashing, and feel the suns heat on my skin. The beach is soothing and calming. The two evoke different feelings within me.
Before choosing a vacation spot I think it is a smart idea to evaluate your motivations and reasons for the vacation. Is ones reasons to vacate their lives for relaxation and rejuvenation or for exploration and adventure? Are you going to go by yourself, with a significant other, with friends, or family? These questions can help you decide which is best for you.
