When you consider this question there are several aspects you need to consider.
Types of PCs and Consoles
Money/Budget
Games
Entertainment Factor
Xbox360 - A really good console by Microsoft and with the availability of Halo 3 for it, it
looks like a promising console to buy considering its cheaper than a Gaming Computer but it
gives to many problems. It keeps getting overheated too easily, Red Lights of Death and you
do not get all the games that come for the PC.
Nintendo Wii - A new type of console that is you have got to immerse yourself in the game
and even with its cheap price it looks good, but there aren't many games for it yet and the
graphics are still a bit bad. Maybe the next Wii would perform better.
PlayStation 3 - In my mind this is the best console out in the market right now, blu-ray
support and real good specifications. Price tag - Cheaper than a Gaming Computer but its
still expensive for a console.
Now that we have looked at a briefing of the consoles and Pcs lets get down to business.
MONEY/BUDGET
If you've got the money go for a PC there is no second choice about it as it will be shown
below. Limited try going for a normal computer if you are not a hardcore gamer, if you are
go for the PS3 or Xbox 360. Stick off the Wii for now unless you are really limited on
cash.
GAMES
Consoles get good games and sometimes they get it ahead of the PC or any other console like
Halo 3 for the Xbox360. On the other hand using a PC is more versatile. Try playing Sims 2
on a PS. Its really difficult. A keyboard has lot more keys and a mouse to make controlling
things easier and more human like. Consoles do not have as much keys and moving around can
be really hard without a mouse.
Therefore PCs usually get more games than Consoles.
ENTERTAINMENT FACTOR
Consoles offer the vibration facility in your control but it ends there unless you get a
Wii which immerses you into the game. Computers do not offer anything like this unless your
going for something like the FPS Jacket which makes you feel bullets!
On the other hand its easier to set up playing LAN games, since you can carry your laptop
if you have one or just tell others to bring theirs to your house. Patching up your games is simple as just going to the website and following instructions. You can also use freeware tools like Xfire for in game communication with friends and recording the number of hours you play, setting up clans and guilds. All these functions are not available with a Xbox or PS alone.
Considering that PCs can do much more than play games is a huge boost in favour of the PC.
REPAIRS
Repairing a console can be a tiresome and frustrating job. Computers are usually easy to repair and they rarely fall into trouble unless they are overclocked. I have used my computer for three years now and had no problems. Another good thing is that PCs can be upgraded. RAM can be increased from 512 MB to 1GB easily without buying a new computer, not so with the consoles.
CONCLUSION
Therefore it is very evident that a PC is a much better gaming platform than the Console. For now the Console needs much more improvement if it wants to catch up with PC.
