Video game reviews: Rez

The video game Rez was released in 2001, and was critically acclaimed. However most people haven't heard of it. This is unfortunate as it is one of the best single player games for the Sega Dreamcast and Sony Playstation 2.

The story follows a lone hacker trying to prevent the AI Eden from shutting down the global network it controls. It is set within the network, and as such the setting is abstract, and there are no traditional storytelling aspects, such as narration or cinematics to advance the story. It is the weakest part of the game as it is not fully apparent or fully explained. However, since it is not an integral part of the game play, this is not a major detractor.

The true value of the game lies in its novel attempt to generate synesthesia in the user. Synesthesia is a commingling of the senses, such that stimulation in one triggers an involuntary response in another. This occurs naturally in as many as 1 in 23 people, and is frequently associated with psychedelic drugs, and has inspired a number of works of art. Rez attempts to produce this effect by the use of trance music and strongly coordinated visuals. The players' interactions with the world generate additional tones which enhance the already rich aural experience, and because they are combined with visual cues and controller vibrations, the entire game becomes a sensory smorgasbord. This, combined with the very simple control set up, makes Rez accessible to players of all ages and abilities.

A new version of Rez, titled Rez HD will be released on the Xbox 360 sometime in 2008. It is being produced by the original designer, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who says it will be "100 percent the same game"; excellent news for fans of the original. Featuring improved sound and video quality, it will be available for purchase on the Xbox Live Arcade.

I look forwards to its release and until then, I still have my trusty copy of Rez on the Dreamcast.
