We all have those moments, when we hear a song; it can transport us back to times of pleasure and times of pain. Moments where all the troubles of the world disappear for two to three minutes, as you are engrossed in all the singer has to sing. It is one of the most reflective tools known to man. There is no one on this earth that has not been influenced in some way shape or form by music. This is a debate that can go either way. It can all depend on the type of work involved. For instance, I worked as a trainee hairdresser for many years and without the radio streaming in the background I don't think I could have motivated myself to do anything. However I can not honestly say that it was not calming as the frantic work in a busy salon would not allow for such an event. With that said after returning to my passion, writing I find that my train of thought would be seriously affected by the melodious tunes ringing in my ear. So I have to say music at work is a distraction.

In a busy office environment there is little room for distraction.Deadlines need to be met, stories written, briefings and meetings need preparation, there is no room for music here. A little stress in life is not always a bad thing, how else would anything ever get done. People bopping their heads along to the newest hip hope beats just would not fit the scene. As much as I find music to be calming and a form of escape from a busy life at home, the same cannot be said about work, it would simply be distracting. Granted a job at the lower end of the concentration scale, maybe stacking shelves, I'm sure music can be a great way of getting through the day, but calming I wouldn't say so. Simply, because work is work, be it hard grafting on a building site or simply shampooing an old ladies head, anything that will take you some where other than the work place is a distraction, I am very sorry to say.
