an occurrence that seems to happen mainly after midnight.
Peering through the front windows at night, some people claim to have witnessed people in 1880s clothing dancing, sitting at tables and listening to music. The most astonishing aspect to this phenomenon is that the main floor is no longer visible from the front
windows; a divider wall has been built between the front bar and main floor that obstructs the view of the entire theatre.
The Tombstone Epitaph, the town's local newspaper, once reported that the son-in-law of one of the employees at the Bird Cage became intrigued by a baby coffin inside the theater's museum area that he noticed was vibrating. He shot twelve rolls of film of this event, and none of the pictures came out.
Is the Bird Cage truly a haunted palace of sin? An alarming amount of employees, tourists, and locals seem to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is. Their faces seem to light up as they tell their passionate and convincing tales of ghostly encounters.
As you walk through the doors of the Bird Cage Theater, it immediately gives you the sensation of traveling back to another time, and truly holds an allure and mystique that must be experienced first hand.
Once described in the New York Times in 1882, as "The roughest, wildest, bawdiest honky tonk between Basin Street and the Barbary coast," the Bird Cage catered to the fantasy of every man who passed through its doors. It was a wicked gathering place that captured the souls of its patrons, and they remain confined to her forever, striving to rekindle the grandeur of the theatre's early days.
The Bird Cage Theater lends new meaning to Tombstone's epithet, "The town too tough to die."
