Capitalism is essential to the American economy. Competition sparks innovation, drives lower prices and progresses society. A global economy furthers these goals and permits all countries to compete. While all countries should be able to participate, there must be rules that everyone abides by to keep the competition environmentally and morally healthy. China refuses to play fairly but continues to reap the enormous benefits of globalization.
The United States' citizens, the world's largest players in consumer spending, can unilaterally force China to abide to the rules of international trade. China blatantly refuses to follow the international treatises regarding environmental health and labor laws. Goods made in China are cheaper, because the Chinese employ children and fail to install environmental safeguards. In doing so, China has made it virtually impossible to compete with their low prices and, simultaneously, has accelerated global warming. Manufacturing plants across the United States have been forced to close because they cannot compete with the factories in China, solely because the Chinese government refuses to enforce the international treatises that they signed regarding environmental safeguards and public policy. In turn, China's economy is booming, and more and more American workers are losing their jobs. Why should the Chinese be able to reap the benefits of globalization without having to respect any of the laws governing it?
They shouldn't. If governments refuse to intervene, companies and consumers must unite to correct the problem. It's simple. Boycott Chinese goods. If the label or sticker says "Made in China," pick up another product. Weighing an extra dollar against the rebirth of the American economy should be an easy decision. Our children's futures depend upon people like you and me making a stand against countries such as China, who exploit international treaties to further their own interests. Companies must do the same. While the short term benefits may seem worthwhile, the long term effects cannot be erased. Beware of stores, like Walmart, whose prices are always far below than that of their competitors. Walmart, a multinational corporation, has many factories in China. While Walmart says it's "your neighborhood store," in reality, it's putting your true neighborhood stores out of business by outsourcing most of its manufacturing to its Chinese plants.
Time has come for Americans to become more American by banning goods made in China. Our economy and children's futures need our support. Buy from companies that refuse to buy from the Chinese, and in turn, more and more companies will fall in line. To do otherwise, would be to turn our backs on one another and permit our economy to collapse.
