Watching someone "falling-all-over-drunk" may be amusing to some people, but there are many reasons for people to "call it a night" after one or two drinks. We, women, have even more reasons than men to stop before we get drunk. Stop before any of these things happen to you, some of my friends wish they had:
Falling down and getting injured: I know women who have fallen down and broken ankles or hips. Drinking impairs most people's balance, and many women have more delicate bones than most men. So we are more likely to break something. There are also twisted ankles from misjudging curbs as well as even passing out on a glass and smashing it into your chest. Try explaining those stitches and resulting scars for the rest of your life. So stop before your balance is impaired; you may avoid possible injury.
Waking up in the bed of someone you don't know: If you're lucky, the person just "put you up for the night." If you aren't, then the person may have gotten you pregnant, may have exposed you to AIDs, may rape you upon awakening, or be violent and either beat you or torture you. You may awaken tied up and unable to defend yourself. The person may or may not let you go. I knew one person who thought someone had been kind and just let her stay over night to "sleep it off." A month later, she found out she was pregnant. She didn't have a boyfriend and she didn't recall sleeping with anyone for months prior. So stop before you pass out or black out and end up somewhere strange to you.
You may wonder away from your group: Some women get drunk and wonder away from their friends, then they can get hurt and no one finds them. So they may fall down and just stay laying there. That would be especially dangerous in the winter with hypothermia and their senses not registering it. They can get raped and may or may not be let go. Someone I knew wondered away and then was raped in a parking lot. All the medical evidence says she was raped, and she remembers having a difficult time with co-ordination while trying to defend herself, but which parking lot and what did he look like? Who knows? But he's still out there. So stop before you wonder away from the group.
Starting fights you may or may not be able to handle: I went to Town Court for a traffic ticket one night and a woman was sitting there with her front teeth knocked out and an eye that looked damaged. She had started a fight she couldn't handle. Her coordination was off and so was her judgment. She swung at another woman who was twice her size. She needed new front teeth and - wouldn't know for awhile - how much sight she will loose from the blow she took to the eye. So stop before you do something you regret later.
Drunk Driving and Driving with ability impaired: There isn't a day that goes by without a newspaper somewhere in this country reporting on a drunk driving accident. Due to our smaller bone structure, the injuries and likelihood of death are increased for women. You could also injure or kill someone in a car you hit. This increases your chances of going to jail for a short or long time.
Is that extra drink worth it? No, call it a night before anything happens to you. Encourage your friends to to the same. If you don't, then you run many risks. The risks include injury, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, torture, permanent impairment, incarceration, and death. So learn to say, "No," and "Good Night."
