Good items to carry in your automobile

Car emergencies can be minimized or eliminated by planning ahead. Buy a map especially if you are driving in unfamiliar territory. Bring your cell phone to call for assistance while on the road. Remember, cell service is not always available especially in remote areas, so stock an emergency kit for your car and always carry documentation required by law to be prepared for anything from a traffic stop to a more serious car emergency.

1.Your driver's license, copy of registration and proof of car insurance should be with you every time you drive your car. Keep your registration and insurance documents locked in your glove compartment. Carry your driver's license in a purse or wallet and carry it with you at all times. If you do not carry a wallet or purse, carry your license in a change purse attached to your car keys. This will ensure you have your license with you every time you use your car keys. A routine traffic stop by a police officer can turn into a real emergency if you forget these important documents when you drive.

2. Keep your operator's manual in your glove compartment with your insurance and registration documentation. Use your operator's manual to diagnosis car problems and learn what action you need to take. Knowledge can decrease panic in emergency situations.

3. Booster cables should have a permanent home in your car along with instructions on how to use them properly. Keep your instructions with your operator's manual for easy access.

4. Make sure your spare tire, tire jack and lug wrench is in good working condition and still in your car. A spare tire should be in your car at all times along with the tools necessary to install it. Purchase a tire repair kit and manual pump as a back up for your spare tire.

5. Prepare an emergency kit for your car. Include a flashlight, batteries, flares, small shovel, and a first aid kit containing a first aid manual. Place water bottles and non-perishable foods in your emergency kit in case you become stranded for an extended period of time.

6. Carry a battery operated radio, extra batteries and an all purpose fire extinguisher to complete your emergency car kit. Enjoy your drive, secure in the knowledge you have prepared for unexpected car emergencies.
