Music is calming provided you are listening and enjoying it. In todays age of fast life and multitasking, people are constantly juggling chores like reading and exercising,
watching television and eating, listening to music and operating on patients...well yes, there are surgeons who cannot do without a Beethoven sonata in the Operation theater. But does it really calm the soul or distract from the task at hand.

As a human, I believe that the greatest creations of civilization, that is music, medicine, arts and science are solely for furthering knowledge and enjoyment of the soul.
If a person is happy at what he or she is doing day to day, then there is no question of added conditions like music to remain calm while doing something that you already enjoy doing.

Imagine a child studying for a math test, would it be advisable for her to play Miley Cyrus in the background while solving a problem in trigonometry? What if she is distracted by the song and doesnt understand a particular lyric and wants to go back to her recorder and play the song again. What happens to the quarrel among thetas sine and cosine, then?

For that matter, I would not want my surgeon to be distracted with the sonata while fixing my nose (what if I want one like Glenn Close and due to the C major confusions end up looking like Ray Romano?)

As it is there is hardly any time left now a days to sit and relax and listen to music. But finding time to calm our selves with it while say for example enjoying a well cooked dinner or reclining in the bath tub amongst rose water is far far different than while convincing a client to take the deal or while reading a crime novel.

I do believe that certain tasks like eating and traveling go hand in hand with listening to melodies, but when it comes to professional arenas, it is a major distraction.
