from Cologne to Frankfurt, you will pass by many fairy-tale like buildings (castles, cottages); I have taken the ride several times myself. Alternatively, if you have more time to spare, take the idyllic boat ride along the Rhine.
Cologne is probably the largest city along the Rhine and it's where you can see the huge, black Cologne Cathedral. While I was impressed by the size of the Cathedral, I did find it frustrating that in between the 10 years I have visited Germany (I went 3 times to Cologne), I have never seen the Cathedral in completeness, some massive renovation works will always be performed on parts of the Cathedral.
Along the Rhine, it is worthwhile to stop at smaller cities like Bonn, Koblenz or Mainz for a 1-day visit (each). Particularly if you are a big fan of Beethoven, you should visit his house in Bonn.
The renowned Heidelburg University town is located along Germany's other important river, the River Nacken. If the weather is good, it's worthwhile to take the hike up to he world-famous Heidelberg Castle from where you can get a fantastic view of the City, especially the old quarters. And what better way to explore a university town than with bicycles and walking? Rent a bike to cycle around the town adn along the river, it will be a real romantic experience.
Famous cities, well-known rivers are not all that Germany has and here, I have only just penned down some of the more memorable places I have been to.
