Election 2008: Obama meets the Clinton machine in the primaries

Democrats Actually Learn From Experience!

The most recent public exchange between the two Democratic Presidential front runners, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama surprises and delights Democrats who feared that history would repeat itself and Democratic candidates, in attacking each other, would give their Republican counterparts all the ammunition they would need to defeat them.

The perpetual backbiting, insulting and 'holier than thou' driven criticisms of fellow Democrats has succeeded only in hading the Republicans a loaded gun - one that they have used successfully, to capture the White House in the past. It did not just contribute to the election of the current President, but also to that of his father, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon. Sometimes, the Democrats seem to lose sight of who the REAL opponents are.

In the recent telecast of Obama and Clinton achieving a kind of thoughtful, if partial, reconciliation, they each credited their 'over zealous' staffs with exacerbating the sound bites and scripting that was beginning to threaten the otherwise slam-dunk of a Democrat into the White House on January 20, 2009. Of course, the fact that they are the vehicles and voices of the scripting of their writers and advisers is the real issue - but nobody, Democrat OR Republican really wants to go THERE!

So they acknowledged each other as two prongs of the same mission but, like the childhood game of "King Of The Hill," only one of them will get to the top in the end. There are dreamers in the party that are now beginning to imagine an ultimate Democratic ticket including them both. While I would be at the front of the line of people to regard this prospect as being unlikely, it is no longer absolutely out of the question.

With the Republicans weakened by 1) the lack of a genuinely electable candidate and 2) the shamelessly demolished economy and world situation the current President has gifted us all with, about they only way they would have a chance at winning would be if the Democrats handed them the mud they needed to sling at them. It's happened before. This year, based on this apparently congenial reconciliation driven by political expediency, we may actually wind up with a Democrat at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue next January.
