Visiting San Diego, California, in the winter

by Kendall Smith

Created on: January 16, 2008

When most of the country is battling snow, ice and sleet San Diego, California is experiencing average temperatures in the upper 50's and a few rainy days. Each year less than 10 inches of precipitation fall in San Diego. On average 267 days are mostly sunny with only 41 days of rain. Those are pretty good odds to deal with when planning a vacation.

One of the most spectacular sights you will ever see is the more than 20,000 gray whales that pass by San Diego while migrating to breeding lagoons on the coast of California. The whale watching season runs from the end of December to the end of March each year. Since whale watching is so popular most of the whale watching cruises and tours are pretty crowded. Well, all of the except for Sail San Diego's Intimate Whale Watching Cruise. They limit the number of people on each cruise to a very small number giving you and your family a more personal experience.

A knowledgeable and skilled guide will take you to the best areas for viewing the migrating whales while answering your questions and sharing the history and facts about gray whales. Unlike others cruises your guide will be standing on the deck right beside you not talking to you over a loudspeaker. Since group sizes are limited you will want to make your reservations in advance at www.sailsandiego.com to ensure they have room for your group.

Each year in February San Diego celebrates Museum Month. What this means to visitors and residence alike; is that you will receive half price admission to any of the over 30 museums in the San Diego area. Simply pick up a free Museum Pass at Macy's, the event's sponsor, and present it when purchasing you admission tickets at the Museum of your choice. The Museum Pass will also give you the location and a brief description of each participating museum. If you want to plan your visits in advance check out their web site at www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org for more details. Weekend attendance may be higher, so if you want to avoid the crowds plan to visit your favorite museum during the week.

The Historical Gaslamp District of San Diego will use any excuse to throw a party, and what better reason than Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras. On February 5, 2008 the streets of Gaslamp will be transformed itself into a wonderland of lights, music and beads for Mardi Gras. There will be 10 stages and entertainment lounges and beads, Sothern Comfort Hurricanes, more beads, Frosty Heinekens, DJ's, Music, beads and dancing in the streets oh and did I mention beads? They have added an extra parade this year with hilarious floats, fire trucks and tons and tons of beads. The gates open at 6:00 and you can get your tickets at the gate for $20.00 or on-line for $15.00.

There are so many new and exciting things waiting for you in San Diego, why would you want to spend your vacation anywhere else?
