Short stories: The Valentine mystery

Dream a Little Dream

Amy laughed as Sean pulled out one of the largest Valentine's Day cards she had ever seen. "Amy Morgan, will you be my valentine?" Amy smiled and threw her arms around his neck. "Yes!"

Amy jerked awake. She could not believe her own brain would revolt against her and think about him at all. She had decided not to think about him anymore because it served no purpose; he didn't even know who she was. She sighed and purposely thought about something else. Today was Valentine's Day. She grinned and stretched her arms high above her head. Boyfriend or not, she decided that today was going to be a good day and that was that.

Amy hopped out of her mom's Toyota and gave her the obligatory wave, "Bye, mom."

"Bye honey! Have a good day!" Amy watched her mom drive off and began walking towards the main building. Jules Anders rammed into her and almost knocked her over. "Oops, sorry Amy," Jules said snidely, "Happy Valentine's Day!" Amy watched as Jules laughed and walked away. Amy shook her head thinking she would be surprised if Jules ever said anything nice at all.

Amy opened the main door and found everyone laughing and throwing colored papers around. Confused, Amy picked up a pink paper and was horrified to read "Amy loves Sean" with shiny, glittery hearts all over it. She looked down the hallway and saw a sparkling stream of shiny finger nail polish paint and colored papers meant to catch everyone's eye. She couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't do anything but stand there and watch her private feelings be exposed to the entire school population.

"Amy!" Her best friend, Cassie, rushed over to her and led her into a small, empty room behind them. "I'm sorry, I've tried to take down or pick up as many of these as I can, it's just"

"It's just that there's so many of them, right?"

"Yeah, they're kinda everywhere," Cassie answered sympathetically.

Amy collapsed into the nearest chair and took the papers from her friend. At first she felt humiliated, but as she looked at the brightly colored papers announcing her darkest secret, she began to get angry.

"Who could've done this?" Amy threw her arms in the air, exasperated. She quickly pulled herself together, jumped up and began pacing. "We need to find out who did this, I want to know."

"Well, I guess there's a lot of people who could have done it. We should probably make a list," Cass stated decisively, pulling a notebook and pen from her backpack.

"Hmm," Amy rubbed
