Poof, they're gone! Magic won't make love handles disappear. The correct diet and exercise will - after a lot of time - and a lot of hard work. What are love handles? They're little fat pouches that some people have over their hips or hanging off the sides over their hips.
How do you get rid of them? First you need to go to a Doctor and get the correct diet for you. The correct number of calories and amount of food in each category (fruits, veggies, carbs, protein, fats). This is important because too many calories will add more fat to the love handles. The correct number of calories for one person will not be the correct number of calories for someone else. While you're there, ask your Doctor what exercises he does not want you to do. Then have him or her check your abdominal area and back plus any other places that s/he thinks are important (like past injuries). Remember NOT to do whatever your Doctor tells you not to do.
Once you have the correct diet for you, it's time to eat correctly and then exercise. What exercises work best? Forward crunches and side crunches work the best. You can do them standing or laying down. Standing is less stressful and less work. Laying down provides more work, but if you don't support your back correctly, can overstress your lumbar area. How many crunches do you do? That depends, most people can start with 5 or 10, but after I had an operation through my mid-section and my Doctor finally cleared me for exercise, I could only do one. Don't forget to do the same number of side crunches on each side or your muscles will not be balanced and this can cause structural problems.
For proper form and technique, I watch Gilad on Fit TV, Tony Little in his Videotapes (DVDs now), and beginner Denise Austin after having a baby videotapes. If you have a personal trainer, physical therapist, or a sports Doctor available, they're wonderful at proper form and technique. Always start with beginner tapes and do not over strain and try to keep up with people way more fit than you. After my operation, I did one, added one the next week and eventually could add five until I could do 60 crunches in each direction.
