If I buy a three dollar tech stock that soars to three hundred, does that make me an investment genius? I think it does. I just saw that little company, and I knew, right then, that it would make all my financial dreams come true. Sure, there were a lot of others out there, but I could see that there was something special about this one!

Now, the paragraph above sounds like sheer lunacy, right? When you buy stocks, you win some and you lose some. Buy enough stocks, and chances are that one of the will do well though most will not. Claiming to have some mystical connection to the market would have people laughing in your face.

And yet for some reason, when it comes to human relationships, there are those who give credence to "love at first site". Go figure.

I will agree that there are lucky people who have formed great relationships based on an initial attraction, just as there are investors who hit it big with a risky trade. However, for every person who lucks out, there are several who lost the bet and are back to square one.

How can you possibly to claim to love someone without knowing anything about that person? How do know you're not looking at a child abuser, or an alcoholic, or a pathological liar? For all you know, that person may have every single of one of your worst pet peeves. She may end sentences in prepositions while driving in rush hour traffic and talking on her cell phone at the same time. Maybe she's a very nice person who just happens to be interested in the gender you are not. You just don't know.

It's easy to fall in love with the thought of a good relationship. We could all fall in love with the idea of waking up on a lazy Sunday morning beside someone special or having a companion to make even the mundane and tedious parts of life enjoyable. It's understandable to project those fantasies onto someone else. It just doesn't make them real.
