Spring in most parts of the country means rain, but in San Diego, California they get most of their rain during the winter months so the spring is all clear skies and fresh ocean air. The temperatures usually don't raise into the seventies until early June, but with an average temp of 67 degrees a light jacket or sweatshirt is all you will need to enjoy the great outdoor activities in San Diego.
Ever wanted to know what the rolling hills of Ireland looks like? Well, you won't find out by visiting the Gaslamp District for their annual ShamRock St. Patrick's Day Block Party On March 17, 2008. Oh they try to give you the feel of Ireland by covering the streets of Gaslamp with over 40,000 square feet of Astroturf (that is over 2/3 of an acre). I am not sure exactly how much green beer you would have to drink in order for the illusion to be complete though. This block party features both traditional and alternative Irish bands; the head liner for this year's event is The Young Dubliners. Tickets can be purchased in advance on-line at www.gaslamp.org for $20.00 and at the gate for $25.00. You may want to get your tickets early as this event tends to sell out quickly.
The Carlsbed Ranch is home to over 50 acres of breath taking color known as The Flower Fields. The Season starts on March 1st and runs until May 11th. You can either take a walking tour of the grounds or take a tractor driven wagon ride. Either way you choose to see this spectacular array of brightly colored giant Tecoltote Ranunculus, Ecke Poinsettias and other flowers you won't be disappointed. The American Rose garden exhibits over 50 different varieties of roses and has as display of more than 170 All American Rose winners since 1940. The Carlsbed Ranch is the only Commercial Ranunculus growing facility that is open to the public.
When most of us hear the word Regatta we think of the eastern shore and Ivy League colleges, but the Atlantic isn't the only place you will find rowing action. The San Diego Crew Classic Regatta is in its 35th year and the Ivy leaguers are coming out to sunning California again this year. Eight of the top 11 crews from last year, including Harvard, Yale and Princeton, will be turning to compete in over 80 races in an attempt to take home the cup. The San Diego Crew Classic Regatta is one of the largest and most important regattas on the American rowing calendar and will be held in Mission Bay on Saturday April 5th and Sunday April 6th 2008.
Although no trip to San Diego is complete until you visit the San Diego Zoo and Sea World, make sure you check out some of the other attractions and activities the San Diego has to offer. You will never have to worry about finding enough to do only finding enough time to do it all.
