Like most moms with young children, I feel like the hired entertainment for a kids party 24/7. Finding day to day activities to do with and/or for the children can at times be quite challenging. Yet, there is hope. For I know that on the horizon, there is Disneyworld. At Disneyworld, or any amusement type resort, there is someone there for my entertainment. Imagine that! A day or a week off from being the clown. I shelled out the money and it's worth every penny for I too can enjoy a vacation.
Nature sights I am sure hold some appeal. However, my husband still breaks out in hives when he recalls how he spent every single family vacation visiting each cavern, colonial village and historic building within driving distance of his New Jersey home. Even though he knows that these trips helped make him the brilliant man his is today, he would rather his kids look back at their childhood with happy vacation memories and just not be so brilliant.
While a resort vacation can be an active one, it is a different type of busy all together. The emphasis is on fun, not work. First of all, the resort itself will have someone to CLEAN the hotel room. That alone can make me happy - although sitting at home with a cleaning lady somehow doesn't scream vacation. I need a little more. Then, there is, if you do this correctly, a pool. That makes everyone happy. Who doesn't want to lay poolside and chill after a long (but oh so fun because remember, I am not in charge of entertaining on this vacation!)day. Of course who can forget the fact that the mom (or dad) does not have to COOK. There are people at resorts who actually do that for you. Nature sights vacations imply some sort of outdoor cooking which is like another language to me, would never happen and starving is definitely not relaxing in the least for either parent or child.
There are even resorts where children can have their own type of vacation and the parents can have theirs. Some resorts call these drop off services "kids camp" or "discovery camp" or "kids club" depending on the theme of the resort. I just call them fabulous! If the family plan is just to hang out by the pool, kids can have more fun playing with other kids for a period of time than yelling "Hey Mom, watch me!" seven hundred times on the diving board. Did I mention that parents can enjoy this time as well? Think of it as a little vacation within a vacation. Now I am not saying that you should go to a resort and stick your kids in one of these camps all day, although I hear that it is an option, but it does give everyone a little something different. And I wouldn't utilize these camps unless I was staying at the resort for a long period of time.
Bottom line: My kids are happier when I am happier. Who can't be happy at the happiest place on earth I ask you?! I see a resort vacation as the opportunity for both grown ups and children to enjoy themselves - each in their own way. Don't get me wrong, my kids balked at the idea of going to Epcot at first, because the rides there aren't as cool as they are at some of the other parks, but there really is something for everyone (including a margarita for mommy!)
