Adult education: How to be an active learner

Being an active learner versus a passive learner is one way to succeed in your educational training. Here are some tips that will tell you how to be an active learner during your stay in adult education classes. Active learners "do;" passive learners "sit."

1. Do assignments that are required. This is the action that will move you along the learning path. If there is homework, do it. If there is a report due, do it. If there are words to study for a vocabulary quiz, study them. If there are group meetings, go to them.

2. Take notes. It doesn't matter if that is required or not; do it. This will keep things clear until you complete the assignments. Taking notes also helps you remember what you are learning. Even if you have a learning disability, you can learn better when you write down the concepts you are learning.

3. Ask questions. If in doubt, speak up. This is active learning. Don't expect the instructor to do all the work. You are the learner. Clarify assignments if you don't know what to do. You not only help yourself when you ask questions, you help the rest of the class. Someone is feeling the same way you do, but is afraid to ask. Step out and ask the instructor to make it clearer for you. There are no wrong questions.

4. Volunteer. When the instructor needs assistance, get up and help. This will let your teacher know that you are listening and care about your education. Your activity will also allow you a breather, a refreshing moment to move about. This helps with attention.

5. Lead, and don't follow. Go forward when the teacher needs someone to lead a group or class. You get two choices in a classroom setting: lead or follow. Be the leader. It will keep you sharp and will help you learn. It has been proven that retention is highest when someone teaches than when someone listens or takes notes.

A last word for adult education students: Adjust your attitude to one of thankfulness instead of one of helplessness. This one task will propel you into your quest for success. Be thankful for all the help you get. Throw off that old coat of helplessness. You are here for a reason! Stay active in the learning process, and you will excel.
