How to make the most of a box of baking soda

by Ron Erb

Boffo Baking Soda brings big benefits for green conscious consumers! Auntie brushed her teeth with it and adding a little vinegar and food color fuels a volcano for budding science students. Baking soda rockets have been around even since I was a lad!

My favorite use for the cheap white stuff is to soften the water for those all-too-rare relaxing baths. (I haven't figured out how to use it for a shower!)

Recently, I have thought of how green baking soda really is. It is a food product that is also an excellent cleaner. Safe enough! Use it to clean the battery terminals on your electric car. It will also work on the gas guzzler's battery. Tired of the smell Fido left in the SUV? Sprinkle baking soda on the carpets and seats and vacuum the odors out. If Junior's tennies smell like they might be green, baking soda inside can only help!

This benign powder is an extremely fine abrasive. Want to make your Cub Scout's pine car derby entry fly? Show him how to use baking soda to polish the axles and wheels! It won't scratch that beautiful glass cook top and nothing works better for taking the tea stains out of your favorite cup.

Sunday morning pancakes are a tradition at our house. Our standard recipe gets "secret" ingredients that change all the time. Guessing at this surprise gets the cobwebs out of early morning brains. Baking soda and something acidic (like brown sugar or a bit of citrus juice) can get flapjacks to lighten up with an added banana.

A kitchen fire can be extinguished with a generous sprinkle at the base of the flames. Be careful not to get spattered with hot grease!

Baking Soda is one product that can save shelf space and money at your house. It can replace many other cleaners that may be toxic or expensive. The only real problem is finding a big enough box of the stuff!
