A New Year, a chance for all that is bad in the world to be replaced by all that is good. We can hope for peace in the Middle East, an end to Global Warming, the eradication of terrorism, and a cure for Cancer and Aids. I'm sure we all want these things, but I also want the return of ten things that we used to have, and that would make the world a better place if they made a comeback.
1.Manners
Wouldn't it be great if people could be polite to each other again? Everyone is in such a hurry these days that we have forgotten to take the time to be nice to each other. As the saying goes, manners don't cost anything'. It would make life so much more pleasant if we all bothered to acknowledge those around us. Just a couple of people saying, "Good morning" makes the whole world seem like it cares.
2.Respect
At the risk of sounding like an old fogy, I would love respect to make a welcome return to our society. When I was young, authority figures like teachers and the police were all respected. We might not have liked them, but we had a healthy fear and respect for them. It made society work. It could happen again. I know that not all teachers and police officers deserve respect, but it would be so much better if we returned to the time when respect was the default position.
3.Honesty in public life
Politicians who tell the truth. I'm not sure if this phenomenon has ever really existed so this might not fully qualify as a comeback'. If it did though, wouldn't it be nice if it returned? Just imagine it. A time and place where we could believe what our esteemed leaders were telling us. Bliss.
4.News rather than celebrity
Wouldn't it be nice to pick up a magazine or newspaper without reading about Britney? Whatever happened to news? I want a return to the days when the media told us what was happening in the world, rather than what one celebrity is doing to another. There is a place for celebrity news, but it isn't on the main news broadcasts, or the front pages of the newspaper.
5.Children playing outside, not on the computer
It would be great if kids could get back to playing outside and move away from their computers. It would help the obesity problem, and develop the social skills of the youngsters. Do kids play football, climb trees, and knock on doors and run away any more? It was all good clean fun.
