Adult Students: You can Finish Your Education
The adult student should know that it is possible to finish your education, whether you are finishing high school and or getting a GED; or going back to college for an undergraduate degree or a graduate degree. You can even go back and get your Ph. D. But it might not be that easy.
We all have different skill levels and different experiences in life that determine the type of education we will need. Some of us need to finish high school and get a GED. Others of us dropped out of college and would like to finish college. Some of us finished college but would like to do a Masters or Ph. D.
Some of us took many seminars in our corporate work that we received college credit for and would like to translate that into a degree by taking a few more courses. Some of us were in the military and would like to use up our GI bill and also translate credits we received while training.
Even within the confines of the degree or learning we are seeking there are different levels of skills we possess.
A high school dropout could have difficulty reading and may need to take reading courses before taking the GED exam. Other high school dropouts may be high achievers who dropped out of high school in their last year when they were almost finished to either get married, have a baby, or go to work.
Other adult students may have had a hard time in school and dropped out for that reason. In this case, school hasn't changed, and it will still be hard.
Most states offer free GED classes that are often administered by the local community college. The student is first given a test to determine what he needs to study and what his educational level is so that a program can be set up for him to study what he needs to study to pass.
If his score indicates that he has a problem with reading or that he is still at an elementary school level he will have to take courses at a literacy center before taking the GED class.
Those high achiever dropouts can just take the GED test. If they fail they can then enroll in a class.
College dropouts who dropped out because of poor grades may not be able to transfer their grades. And it might be hard getting accepted by a college if your grades were too low but there is hope. You can enroll in a community college. If you make good grades there for two years you can then transfer to a four-year college. Sometimes you can transfer sooner, depending on your grades and the grades from your first college.
