Online video game reviews: Night of the Zombies

Ever have one of those post-apocalyptic days? You know the feeling: day in, day out, endless zombies, milling about... What's a working stiff to do? If only you had the knowledge, skills and abilities, you could really go the distance in this zombies-eat-your-brains-world. But wait! There's new and improved NOMBZ to show you the way (see your dealer for details, not available in some altered states or parallel dimensions).

Wow! This 3D shooter game should be rated a welcome PG-13 for polishing your basic, need-to-know, zombie-fighting skills. And it's without the typical splashy distraction of dripping, realistic gore (sold separately). Bonus!

Before engaging you in making zombie puree, the game provides you with helpful hints such as... flossing daily can significantly reduce the risk of gingivitis and other gum related diseases. I laughed so hard when I saw that.

In this game, you are the character Mot. Big of chin and stout of heart. You have a gun, a crowbar and an attitude. The zombies shuffle about until they notice you. Then, they want to kill you. To quote Dennis Hopper... Zombies, man they creep me out...

You can run, ha ha ha, but eventually, they'll corner you and you'll have to fight. You move using the WASD keyboard keys and your weapons are used with the mouse. You can auto fire the gun until you run out of ammo, and while you're auto reloading, the crowbar is an especially handy tool for splattering multiple zombies.

The small, on-screen map is useful for running away.

And while you're fleeing in terror, you'll notice the 1950s, B-movie, shock horror decor of the neighborhood. It's the latest trend in weird netherworld angles. The graphics are well done, albeit in a sinister, eerily-lit, mentally disturbed cartoon fashion. Works for me. And, combined with the amusing soundtrack, you'll feel like you're in the afterlife world of Beetlejuice.

Eventually, you'll need to find the exit. It's a big white circle with the number 10 inside. If you can stay alive inside the circle until the number counts down to 0, you'll graduate to the next level.

In the higher levels, there are more challenges. These are also friends: a lumberjack with a chainsaw and Molotov, a mailman with a machine gun, a nurse with a mysterious syringe and a cop with a shotgun. Since there are 25 levels, the challenges will get quite interesting.

The game controls are easy to understand and use. You can customize them to suit your zombie-slaying desires and adapt them to your computer's abilities. Gamers with low or high end PCs can enjoy this game. Nice touch.

The zombie shooter concept isn't anything new, but, with its unusual twist, this game is simply excellent. And, unlike most other games, this game doesn't take itself seriously. It's hilarious fun!

The price wasn't given, but I know that I'll get this game when it's released.

Well done! I give this game a 5 out of 5.
