Road trip tales

The Power of Costco....

For one of the very first times in my life I had the opportunity to sleep in on Christmas morning. This year my ex had the boys in the AM and I did not have to make my trek to the airport until at least 11am. That being said the only thing I was tasked with on Christmas morning was prepping the turkey with some butter and seasonings and then tossing it in the oven. Believe me, that was plenty for me to do. I have never cooked a turkey, nor had I ever thought I would cook a turkey. The task itself is daunting and I find the fact that the entire Christmas dinner hinges on it extremely overwhelming. This year my mother was coming into town and she was going to cook dinner with all of the trimmings. My job; pick up my mom (Nana) and my oldest son at the airport and make sure there was plenty of wine, cheese, crackers, onion dip and stuffed olives to snack on. The presents from Santa had been out and under the tree since Monday afternoon, all of the Dad gifts had been wrapped and the house was spotless. My job was done.

Christmas Eve I finished a few last minute details, finished my Pinot Grigio and hit the sack around 11pm thinking I could sleep until at least 10am. I popped Tylenol PM and did my best to relax (I get excited about Christmas too). At 4:30am my cell phone started to ring - I ignored it. Then my house phone started to ring - I ignored it. Then my cell phone rang again. I knew without question it was my mother calling. Speed dialing every line in the house is my mother's M.O. When I was in high school she would call during summer vacation to wake me up. First my mother would call the line in my room, then she would call the house line, then call my room again, then call the house line, then call my room. This would go on and on until I picked up the phone.....it was her way of telling me that if she was up so was I. When I would finally answer the phone she would say, "Hey son, I just wanted to see if you were up." Yes, after the tenth attempt at ignoring your phone calls I would say I am finally up....thanks for allowing me the pleasure of being a lazy teenager. She did this in college too. Have I mentioned how much I love my mother? Anyway, this Christmas morning I answered the phone at 4:30am to hear my mother explain how she was going to miss her flight because she had no picture ID. She recently moved to Texas and switched her license and only had a paper temporary (in this day and age
