Your PC is going to slow down over time. This may be due to several causes. Some causes would be Viruses, Spyware and Adware and even Bloatware. Some may be caused due to hardware malfunction. Your computer can even slow down with age.
The best solution would be to format your hard disk and start with a clean install of your Operating System, but that's not worth it especially if you cannot backup all your data, and your configuration as well. Another method is to upgrade your computer with a more powerful processor and higher RAM, but your probably looking for a free method with your same hardware capabilities.
NOTE : All these methods have been tested ON WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL. I cannot guarantee it will work or even will be available in other Operating Systems.
SOLUTIONS
First lets start with some simple tweaks to speed up your PC.
OPTIMIZING GRAPHICS FOR PERFORMANCE
1) Right Click My Computer and select properties.
2) Click on the advanced tab. Then click on the settings button
3) Now click on the check box, which says Adjust for best performance.
This will remove effects such as fade in and shadows which most users do not even notice. If you like all the animation and effects then I suggest ticking off the ones you don't want. This uses extra RAM for unwanted reasons. Turning these effects off can give a noticeable boost when having lot of folders open.
DEFRAGMENTING HARD DISKS.
Fragmenting occurs when files are often moved, deleted or created. This can increase time to search for files.
De-Fragmenting can help reduce the time taken to search for files and improve access speeds.
You can use the inbuilt defragmenter in Windows XP or download an alternative and I should say better one for free.
I prefer using Auslogics Hard Disk Defragmenter.
ADJUSTING START UP OPTIONS
Do you have lots of applications starting up when you boot up the computer. Well you probably don't need all of them to start up. Maybe you want to turn something off.
1)Go to start click on run and then type msconfig
2)Click on the startup tab
3)Now uncheck any programs you do not want to automatically startup when the computer starts
Rule of thumb: Don't uncheck it if you don't know what it is.
This will decrease booting time.
DISABLING UNNECESSARY SERVICES
1)Go to start click on run and then type services.msc
2)Disable the following services and continue normal usage
a)Automatic Updates
b)Clipbook
c)Computer Browser
d)Fast User Switching Compatibility - This disables the option of switch user.
e)Indexing Service
f)Net
