taking a small sample at the site of the infection, and attempting to culture it. Cultures can also be taken of the blood or sputum. People with a widespread anthrax infection will also develop antibodies in their blood which can be tested for as well.
Treatment for both types of anthrax infection involves the use of antibiotics. The most common antibiotic used is ciprofloxacin. For mild cutaneous forms of the infection oral cipro is given for no less than two weeks, and possibly up to two months. In more severe cases of inhalation anthrax, intravenous antibiotics must be given. The treatment length for inhalation anthrax can be quite long, keeping the patient in the hospital for many weeks.
Because of its potential use as a bioterrorism weapon, health authorities are becoming more aware of anthrax as in public health issue. Many cities in America are now developing procedures for dealing with a widespread outbreak of anthrax. There is a vaccine available, however it is only typically given to people who are considered at high risk for infection. Anthrax infections should be taken very seriously, as even with treatment they can be particularly deadly.
