What would you do with a million pounds?

PLENTY OF POUNDS

In American currency, at today's exchange rates, one million British pounds equals $1,958.299. That's nearly two million American dollars.

What could be done with such funds?

MAJOR WINDFALL

Just for fun, let us assume that this entire sum arrived unexpectedly, rather than gradually. In other words, this is unplanned extra cash. It's a splendid and superfluous surplus of resources that are not yet allotted or spoken for.

MAKING A PLAN

What would I do with a cool two million?

Let's start with tithing. The first fruits, or top ten percent belongs to the Lord. In other words, $200,000 should go immediately into the collection plate, or some ministry concern.

Certainly, a reasonable amount should be placed into savings or investments. As fast as my children are growing up, those college tuition bills will be heading this way before we can blink. Perhaps another ten percent will be enough.

That brings the total down to approximately $1,600,000.

MEMO ON TAXES

At this point, I would probably phone up an accountant to plan for taxes. (This was taxable income, right?). Probably, quarterly filing would be required. I would want to be ready and punctual. After all, it would certainly not do, to have a tax audit after such a wonderful surprise!

This would also be an excellent opportunity to research charitable donations and their effect on taxation of this windfall.

MARVELING AND DREAMING

With the preliminaries covered, it would be time to dream!

Planting churches in underdeveloped countries would be a sure choice. In some spots, an entire church building can be erected for a few hundred dollars. Additional funds could educate, train and support missionaries, teachers and other workers to minister to people in such locations.

By establishing smart investments, I might also carve out an opportunity to focus solely on writing and publication, rather than meeting daily expenses. Who knows? Maybe one more writer would actually finish that intended book?
