The term easy-to-read can mean different things to both writers and their readers. Some categorize easy-to-read poetry as juvenile. Short and simple rhymed pieces that are meant for beginning readers.
This generalization of the term easy-to-read poetry excludes many wonderful pieces of mature and well crafted work. There is not one set definition that encompasses this form of poetry.
A poet should follow a few basic guidelines for writing a successful easy-to-read poem.
The words should flow easily, one to the next. Usage of long or complicated words can be detrimental if they do not seamlessly intertwine with those before and after.
There should be a rhythm to the words; they should waltz across the page with each other. Whether it is beautifully written prose or charming rhyme, there should be a sense of balance and purpose.
A rhymed work of words will often prove to be difficult to accomplish unless it is intended to be fast paced and fun. A beautifully written piece of rhymed poetry will be lost with the presence of a forced rhyme, or a phrase that doesn't really fit just for the sake of the rhyme.
An easy-to-read poem does not have to be short nor does it have to be epic. It must begin, take the reader on a journey and end. A truly good easy-to-read piece of poetry will bring the reader back to it again and again.
