Writing from the standpoint of a retired fire-fighter who has attended numerous car fires, the priority when a car goes on fire is SAFETY. Car fires can start through electrical fault or as a result of a collision and should it happen to you, make it your first priority to get everyone out of the car. Even if the fire is relatively small, do not take any unnecessary risks by trying to gather possessions.
Remember : Your car is full of flammable materials and fluids, the most dangerous being the gas in your tank. Don't assume that because the fire is located at the front of the car, that there is no danger of the gas tank erupting. Whatever the nature of of the fire, think about only one thing. Emptying the car of people.
Remaining safe in the face of a car fire is really a matter of common sense. There are some basic measures you can take should you ever find yourself in this position.
1. In the event of fire, leave the car immediately. Try to remain calm, especially if you have any children or older people as passengers. Help them from the car as there is a possibility that children and the elderly may panic and find it difficult to free themselves from their safety-belt.
2. Take yourself and your passengers as far away from the car as possible in the event that there may be an explosion. Keeping this unlikely possibility in mind, will actually encourage you to be especially safety conscious.
3. If you are carrying a cellphone, call the fire service, but only after you have confirmed the safety of those traveling with you. Give the emergency services clear direction as to your location.
4. Do not be tempted to return to the car for any belongings. If the car fire is relatively small, the chances are that your possessions will be salvaged by the fire service personnel. If the fire is more serious, simply accept that your possessions will perish. Saving your life and the lives of others is the priority. Possessions can be replaced.
5. In the event that young children are involved, it would be best to remove them to a place where they can no longer see the fire as this can be very distressing to them. Remind them in a calmer moment that the car is only a material possession that can be replaced.
Treat car fire as you would any other. With utmost respect. If you always think of personal safety, you will generally do the right thing.
