Why wouldn't you let women play on a major league baseball team? It is important to remember that the M in MLB does not stand for men or man. It would perhaps be unfair to automatically assume that anyone who rejects the idea that women should not be allowed to play in the majors is automatically a sexist or a woman stuck in the late 1800s, so I won't assume. But unless there is a specific rule somewhere in that ancient pamphlet that says women cannot play, how could you possibly make a case against them.
The point of any professional sports league, whether minor or major, is to have the best talents in the game showcased. While there has not been much precedent for it in baseball, perhaps none, there is nothing out there that rules out the notion that women are capable of playing at that level.
In any case, it would be a good thing for baseball. With all the recent scandal that has ravaged the majors concerning who did or did not take what, from who, why, or how, it would be a welcome change to have a warm and new challenge for baseball to address. This kind of progressive movement would be a better debate, if you could call it that. The major league has already made strides to diversify it's community by seeking out international players and incorporating gifted female players into the fold would go far in furthering the diversity.
The ability to market these female players alone would be enough of a reason to consider it should the possibility become a likely reality. Baseball has never been healthier true but to bring new audiences and groups to come and support these women would only help the situation. With anything you would no doubt lose fans, but isn't that what people kept saying when the steroids issue hit the fan? We all know how that played out...
Point and case, the U.S. is light years behind the rest of the world when it comes to women's rights and denouncing ideas like equality in sports only serves to further demean our professional leagues.
