Drink recipes: Marilyn Monroe champagne cocktail

Marilyn Monroe Champagne Cocktail

By definition, a cocktail involves the mixing of an alcohol with different admixtures. In short, an alcohol beverage with more than two liquid consumables can be classified as a cocktail. It is not necessary that the other liquid be another form of alcohol nor is the ice in any drink considered a liquid consumable.

The classic champagne cocktail is a flute of champagne infused with a sugar cube and a dash of bitters. The sugar cube is soaked with the bitters (one drop should do) and placed in the bottom of a champagne flute. The wine is then poured over the top and the drink served cold once the sugar has dissolved. If the flute is garnished, as lemon twist is standard. Other champagne cocktails involve the mixing of fruit juice and champagne and have come to be known by other names such as the mimosa, which is a blend of champagne and orange juice.

Marilyn Monroe was legendary in her love of champagne. Many of her movies established her as a debutante and had her drinking champagne in scenes. Established as a drink of the well to do, folklore has it that she once even bathed in the bubbly wine. It then stands to reason, that a version of a champagne cocktail be name for her.

The recipe for the Marilyn Monroe Champagne cocktail is as follows:

Into a champagne flute, pour
1 ounce of apple brandy and
A few drops grenadine.
Complete the cocktail by filing the remaining flute with champagne.

With the difficultly bartenders or mixologists may have in obtaining apple brandy, there are alternatives that call for apple juice and regular brandy. However, with widespread availability of internet and phone ordering, fine establishments should be able to hold to the original recipe and deliver the intended flavor combination.

Like Marilyn Monroe, class never goes out of style.
