head of the party they have not only failed to obtain further gains but have dwindled back into the realms of a no where party, and it is a safe bet that many of their seats will return to the Tories during the next election.
In America it looks as though the Democrats will continue to gain ground on the Republicans in the run up to the US elections. Again, this could largely to be considered to be the work of someone else, namely the current Republican government led by George W Bush.
The war in the Middle East has long been a divisive issue in the US but as more soldiers fail to come home, larger numbers of US citizens are starting to believe the war is being mismanaged. Whether they believed or not in going to war with Iraq, one thing is clear and that is they all want the soldiers back home. The Republicans have failed to provide this and so they will look for a change in Government.
The second factor in America, and I admit the war has been a large contributing factor, is the Republicans management of the American economy.
America is right now heading towards a possible financial crisis and although this may still be avoidable, it will need careful management to avoid. Plus, whatever is done America will spend at least the next year in an economic slump with people feeling little or no growth. This fact I believe will lead to vote Democrat for the next presidency.
Overall, in either case one thing is plainly clear. People want a change. In both cases the existing government in one form or another has been in power for two terms and in today's get bored easily world we all want something different. So my prediction for 2008 will see a comeback in the polls for the Democrats in the US and the Conservatives in the UK.
I also predict that they will both be jumping on the eco green coloured bandwagon in the run up to their respective elections. But they should be warned, as both countries will be experiencing economic problems and will not tolerate a government that brings further taxes no matter what bandwagon it belongs to.
