So many experts! So few people who have the slightest idea of what is involved in ending the war in Iraq. Suggesting that the troops just pack up their tents and come home is a commonly expressed comment. But, would that truly end the war? I and millions of others believe that would only prolong the situation and peace would certainly not come to the Iraqis or the rest of the Middle East. Bin Laden and other extremists are simply waiting in the wings just hoping for this to happen. The bloodshed which we have seen there in the past would pale by comparison as the fight to control the country which would ensue.
The only hope to end this war anytime soon is for the United States to stay committed to see this through to victory. Victory will only be obtained when the people of Iraq have united behind a democratic leader and put aside their differences to concentrate on their common goals, i.e. political stability, justice, freedom, a healthy economy, universal education, good hospitals, rebuilding their infrastructure and taking their place as a responsible player in the world. This can not happen if the United States removes its' troops and other assistance before the Iraqis have made significant progress in achieving the common goals. In the other major wars that the United States has been involved in, the former enemies are now allies and we are all better off that America did not just cut and run. It may take several more years, but we should unite behind leaders who recognize that doing anything else would be a disaster that must be prevented.
If we only look at the number of deaths and casualties our troops and our allies have incurred and continue to do so, it would be a terrible mistake. As these sacrifices continue we should remind ourselves that the entire future of humanity is at stake here.
