Should US environmental standards apply when multinational companies develop the petroleum resources of fragile ecosystems such as Peru's Amazon?

Title endorsed in part by:

from A to B for a lot less fuel, and so save the environment, not just of our own country but the whole world.

To do this requires political will on all sides, including multinational companies. I fear this will never happen as long as countries continue to cower in front of any company which suggests that it is in their best interest that the company gets its way.

As for US environmental standard applying to these companies, I regret to say they shouldn't. Instead, precisely because they are multinational companies a multinational set of standards should apply. The US standard is not the same as other countries, and there may be valid policies that other countries could contribute to the whole issue of valid, beneficial standards that EVERYONE should be upholding, not just one country, one company, or a small group of people.

This is a matter for all of the human race and we should be prepared to stand up and be counted, ensuring that multicorporations, all governments, and other organisations, do what is best for the planet and all species, not just for the most money. Money after all is a false commodity. If someone wanted to say tomorrow that a particular currency was no longer legal tender then anyone who has lots of money stashed away would find it worthless. The planet however, and the people on it, are real, solid, entities, which have a lot to give, and should be allowed to give it without losing their lives or livelihoods.
