Should US environmental standards apply when multinational companies develop the petroleum resources of fragile ecosystems such as Peru's Amazon?

Title endorsed in part by:

Multinational Companies at present are given almost carte-blanche to do what they wish, ignoring the environmental and social issues of any country in which they have a presence. Whilst each company is supposed to follow the laws of each country in which they invest, they nevertheless have regard for only one thing - profit: the more the merrier.

Unfortunately, this type of attitude by global companies has encouraged many smaller poorer countries to allow these multinational companies to override their own laws, with total disregard for the local environment and the greater, forward looking impact on the world at large, all for the sake of MONEY! The little countries are encouraged to get as much as they can, and the multinationals are out for as much as they can get regardless of the effect on the global economy or the human race, or the planet.

There are many fragile ecosystems throughout the world for which it will take little effort to throw out of kilter, but the Amazon Rainforest is one of the key ecosystems which control not just the Amazon river and its surrounding countries but effects the ecology of the whole world, and every other place on Earth. Yet, the multinationals care nothing for this devestation. They blame the poor countries of the Amazon region for choosing to tear up their rainforest. But the need for money to pay for essential resources means they must look at the few resources they have and sell what will bring the most financial yield. That is the way business works but it does not mean it is the best way for the future of the world.

The global corporations do not cover just financial institutions, they also include petroleoum companies. These major players are seeking oil, and in turn petrol, wherever they can find it, all for the purpose of vehicles that humans use on this planet.

There are far too many cars, lorries, and other vehicles on the roads in the world today: there are also far too many airplanes in use which require huge amounts of oil and petrol to run them. As a species humans have become lazy, and we would rather give up our landscape, endure worse weather, just to save a few minutes here and there on the massive road and air system now in place. What a waste!

I don't encourage the banning of vehicles altogether, for there is some need, however, I do think we should forget about having a car to take us less than a mile, and if we must use vehicles, use public transport instead which can transport a far larger number of people
