Guide to ski resorts in Canada

I can't say I know anyone who has had the opportunity to stay at even a tenth of Canada's resorts. I can say though, that I have covered a lot of powder at a lot of different places. This is not a definitive list by any stretch of the imagination, but they are a few of my favorites.

By far, the best skiing I have ever encountered was at Kicking Horse resort, in Golden, BC. They have some of the best snow that the Rockies have to offer. A word of warning though, this is not where you take the kids to learn. My last trip to "The Horse" was absolutely phenomenal. The accommodations and restaurants are classy, and accessible. My favourite was the small lodge at the top of the mountain, which provided stunning views, and an excellent variety of food and beverages. The runs are long, with a good dose of fresh powder arriving frequently. Also, "This guy I know" said that the (illegal) off-piste skiing off the back face of the mountain is as good as you will ever find.

For a more diverse experience, Sunshine Village, in Banff, Alberta is your best bet. It has runs for every experience level, including the infamous "Delirium Dive" and "Wild Side" which are extreme runs, for experts only. The accommodations at Sunshine are comfortable, and the restaurants and bars provide a friendly atmosphere. On a warm day, the patio at "Trapper's" is the place to stop for a pitcher and some lunch. The price is right, and if the weather cooperates, you will find some great in bounds powder.

The family of kamikaze skiers will appreciate Norquay, also in Banff. It is a very family friendly place, but here are also some of the steepest groomed runs in the country at this resort. It lacks the glamor of some of the larger resorts, but the chalet is open and welcoming, and the food is great. While there are no on hill accommodations, Norquay is only a 20 minute bus ride from Banff, where you will find great apres ski activities. I would recommend a pint and some stuffed yorkshire puddings at St. Jame's Gate, just off the main drag.

Heading back to Ontario- Blue Mountain, located in Collingwood, is the largest in the province. It has a multitude of accommodations, and pubs and restaurants to suit every taste and budget. From first-timers to experienced skiers, Blue has a run for everyone. For the most difficult runs, head up in the morning and ski the north hills. You will not be disappointed.
