Yes! I think writing for a living can pay off.
There are many avenues you can take in a writing career, these include:
*Novels
*Screenplay (tv/movie scripts)
*Playwright (live theatre)
*Short Stories
*Articles of interest
*Essays
*Text Books/Manuals
*Technical (example: Medical Journals or How-to assemble a toy or a new piece of furniture with illustrations...)
Some writers receive a regular paycheck, have normal working hours, benefits, vacations... These are staff writers.
Many writers are freelancers, meaning they don't have a boss. They write and sell their work to any publisher that's willing to buy it. Greeting Card Companies need writers, so do newspapers, magazine publishing houses and television stations...

Just like actors, artists, dancers... it's difficult to generate a steady income as a writer. That's why residual income is so important, because it provides a steady base of income on which to build.
That's what the screen writers in America are fighting for isn't it? Residuals on their work.
They're making a determined effort to solidify their income as a recognized group of professionals (a union).
With all sorts of talented writers at loose ends, sites like Helium.com could benefit. It's a place for a serious writer to come and have a daily work out at the keyboard and discuss, explore, create.... In fact, if the strike lasts long enough, we may find an entirely new class of writer. Going off to do what the United Artists did back in the day... forging their path, in their own best interests, without the old school studios or publishing houses.
A good writer can blog, and end up creating a best selling book or movie. A simple blog on "What I'm doing day by day waiting for the strike to end, by XXXXX 'Heroes' writer - created the Cheerleader character"
People would be interested, possibly interested enough to buy a new line of comics.... who knows?

We're on a new frontier.
It doesn't have to be 'who you know' to earn money as a writer. If you tie in your writing with a decent on-line marketing plan, then you can find yourself doing quite well.
You may never really make the big time, but you can earn enough to live on, plus a bit on the side. And then, there's the beauty of doing something that you really love... connecting, expressing, exploring, making people feel what you feel, see what you see through words...
