How to stay up all night

Staying up all night can be regarded as either a necessary evil or a useful skill. Either way there are a few key points to succeeding without putting a large strain on your body.

First, think about why you are staying up all night. If you don't have to stay up, it's generally better not to. After an already long day, sleeping for a few hours then waking up can make you more productive than just plowing through the night. However, if there are no other options for you, then go for it.

Many people will pound down a large meal prior to trying to stay up, thinking it will give them more energy. This is not a good idea, as large meals tend to make you sleepy as your body works on digesting. To maintain your energy it is far better to eat smaller meals throughout the night, rather than all at once. Ideal foods are those that are easy to digest, don't have high amounts of sugar, and contain protein. Trail mix is excellent, yogurt and cereal can work well also. Sugar can boot your energy, but will cause you to crash later, so it is better to avoid it.

Caffeine is a mixed blessing. It can increase your wakefulness, but it makes some people jittery and distracted. If you find it hard to concentrate while using caffeine, it would be bad to use it to stay up while writing a paper. On the other hand, if you are staying up in a social situation where concentration isn't as vital, it can be very useful. When it comes to caffeine, it is best to know your reaction and limits, so that you are still functional and awake.

The true key is to stay active. Stay focused on what you are doing, and don't do activities that are passive, such as watching TV or reading. There isn't a lot to do late at night, so know what you are planning to do in advance and sock up on whatever supplies you will need before the stores close. Keep the lights on if you can; if you are using the computer this will both save your eyesight and keep you more alert.

Staying up all night is useful, however, don't over do it. Chronic caffeine addiction, disrupted sleep patterns, and a weakened immune system can be side effects of not getting enough sleep.
