Asperger's syndrome: What it is

Did you know that children with Asperger Syndrome can have a "normal intelligence level or language development"? They can seem normal, yet act in an odd manner, once they are in a social situations. According to Kirby (2005), many physicians have noticed a rise in the children affected by this condition. However, they are urging parents to learn about this special condition, so their child will not be misdiagnosed or suffer needlessly.

What is it?

Children with Asperger's Syndrome have "neurological problems", which causes them to "display autistic behaviors" (Kirby, 2005). This neurological disorder is named after" Hans Asperger, a Viennese physician", who discovered the disorder in "1944". But, it wasn't till "1994", when the disorder was added to the "DSM IV", which list all mental disorders. Many Children may exhibit symptoms that are mild to severe, which can cause stress on the entire family.

Are the symptoms?

Asperger's Syndrome causes the child to have trouble adjusting in social situations and do not react well to changes in their routine. Many "characteristics" begin showing up, usually before the age of five or younger. Some children may prefer eating the "same food", "playing with same toys", or "watching a movie over and over". They may be exceptionally intelligent, but may have trouble displaying it in "social situations".

How is it diagnosed?

Many parents feel like "improper parenting" (Kirby, 2005) has led to their child's condition or unwanted behavior. Classic symptoms that psychologist look for are "sensitivity to noise or light", unable to interact socially, or display certain behaviors consistently. A child with Asperger Syndrome actually "views the world differently" than most children. Unfortunately, these special children are "misunderstood", "generally targeted", or "teased", by those around them.

Is Help Availble?

It is important to get help for them at an early age, since these children struggle to fit in and be understood. These special children will need a consistent routine, in order to feel secure in their home environment. Many schools offer classes that will help the child excel in school, but the child may still display "odd" or "disruptive behavior" (Kirby, 2005). Furthermore, many children with Asperger's Syndrome may have "high IQ's, but may not be able to understand a "non-verbal command".

Can I Learn More?

Fortunately, there is help for parents, who are struggling to understand their child's behavior. However, it is up to you to do your homework and learn more about your child's condition. For example: some may prefer "soft clothing", "see and hear things other don't", and they may sound like they are "well-educated"(Kirby, 2005). These children are special and need assistance, in order to stop struggle they are in.

Conclusion

First, parents should have their child tested, by a certified psychologist and determine if the child has this disorder or not. Then, they should also make sure that their child is improving with their current course of treatment. If not, they should look for another local specialist, who specializes in these types of childhood disorders. Therefore, each family must work together and find ways to help their child, while modifying any unwanted behavior.
