Choosing a personal trainer

Working with a personal trainer can be well worth the investment. I'd advise anyone who is just starting a fitness program or those with any sort of physical conditions to strongly consider the services of a trainer. The best way to find a good trainer is to ask people you know for recommendations. If that isn't possible or doesn't help, check with health clubs in your area or online. There are a number of certifications. I recommend that you find someone who has a degree in Health Fitness, Rehabilitation Programs or something related. There is also a certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) that your trainer may have. The point is to make certain you find someone qualified and not just an well meaning fitness buff. A qualified trainer will be able to help you reach your fitness goals regarding exercise, but should also be able to address any special physical conditions and some nutritional info as well.

It is equally critical that the trainer you select is someone who you like, BUT who will also push you and require you to really do what is necessary to reach your goals. It's nice if you are friends but this is a professional relationship. You don't require your doctor or pharmacist to be your buddy, so don't approach this relationship in that manner either. You are going to benefit the most when your trainer has your fitness as his/her primary responsibility.

Lastly, make sure your trainer sits down with you and truly understands what you are trying to accomplish. It is imperative that you explain any medical conditions or anything he or she needs to take in consideration when developing a program for you. I have used a trainer to get a good program started. The trainer helped me to outline what I wanted to accomplish and the steps required to get there. I worked with them for 6 - 7 sessions. After that, I continued on my own. Periodically I can go back for a "tune up" which helps to measure results so far, and tweak my exercises to provide variety and also to push myself with new workouts. This is a great way to use a trainer and keep the expenses in check.

Let's talk about fees. Most trainers will charge between $45. to $75 per hour. Some may offer discounts if you buy a package all at once. Also, my trainer will work with my husband and I together for 1 hourly fee. This works well for us, but be careful you receive the attention you need if you are sharing a trainer. Also, some specialize so if you are training for a marathon, find a trainer who has worked with other distance runners or whatever your specialty is. There are some who specialize in rehab training for those who are coming back after injury.

Working with a trainer can definitely help you improve your fitness. They can also make sure you don't hurt yourself trying to do things without the proper knowledge. Another big advantage is being accountable to someone else. I find I work out much harder when I know my trainer is going to be checking my progress. This is after all an investment in your health and you can't put a price on that. Do your homework, check references and get started. Great physical fitness is the best gift your can give yourself.
