If you need to communicate with your ex after a divorce then there are some considerations to be made inorder for this endeavor to run smoothly. As a couple, your communication skills with each other will probably already be on the rocks. On top of this, you may both have problems with each other which threaten to rear their ugly heads as you attempt to discuss matters.
The following are some tips to help you to communicate with your ex in a non-threatening and reasonable manner and to receive the same consideration from them in their communication style with you.
Tip 1#
Think of your communication as being a business deal where your ex is another business person who you must cope with effectively in-order to make the deal run smoothly.
When you have a major issue to discuss make an appointment that is mutually agreeable. Turn up on time like you would for any other business meeting and be ready to clearly state what you want and to listen to what your ex wants.
Tip 2#
Leave out of your communication any emotional language. Carry on with the business theme. If you were at a business meeting for a job you wouldn't talk about how you hated your business partners mother or about how your business partner made you feel ugly and unappreciated, accompanied by crying time.
Keep your emotions in stock as you talk. If your ex makes you feel mad or sad then save that for later when the communication is over and they have gone away.
Tip3#
Be prepared. Have with you any legal information or documents if you may need them, just as you would have your resume and cover letter when impressing a new boss. You don't actually need to impress your ex, just to let them know that you mean business.
Tip4#
Keep track of your communication. If verbal agreements are made to your advantage then get them in writing as evidence. Don't leave anything to chance.
Tip 5#
Try to keep your communication meetings on neutral ground and away from children if you have any.
Tip6#
If your ex wont play ball and deal with you as professionally as you are behaving then don't be afraid to introduce a mediator to take your part at meetings instead of you.
Tip7#
Just as you wouldn't expect to have to deal with work issues late at night, or at odd hours, don't expect to communicate with your ex at those times either.
By insisting that your ex respect your personal time, and by respecting theirs, you can gain allot of ground by knowing when to relax, and when to do business without it encroaching too much on your new life.
Tip 8#
If your ex is being difficult, but you cant get away from communicating with them, then don't give them your home telephone number, and if they already have it then change it.
Do, however, still be reasonable and have another number which you give to them which you use only with them. That way, if they trouble you, you can switch the phone off, or choose not to answer it until a convenient time arises.
