Reflections of a golf widow

I am a happy golf widow.

My husband is an avid golfer. He is very good at this sport, and he loves to play. We live in a golf resort community, and it is this game which has taught me that there is more to married life than a husband giving in to his wife's every whim. Wives constantly tell their husbands that they need to get out more, and golf gives my husband that chance to be out in the open air, getting exercise and being social with other people other than me and these kids.

Sure, it is an expensive sport, but it is one which allows people the chance to be civil to one another, to practice gentility and to be courteous to one another, which are traits in this modern age which seem to have gone the way of leg warmers and way too much make up.

It gives me a chance to be by myself for a guaranteed 4 hours at a time, and this is time that I take to do what it is that I love to do, which is write, read and meditate. We wives forget that before we came along, the men we marry had lives that did not include them hanging on our every word or worrying that we are somehow going to be hurt by something that they did without us. Grow up ladies, and learn to appreciate that four hours you don't have to find the remote, bring a beer or make a sandwich!

Ladies, you should feel lucky that your man is out in the open air, dressed better than he does on Sunday morning for church, being civil with other people, and not burping or passing gas in your direction and asking you to rate it! It is enough that they have to be the knight in shining armor for us, the horse for the kids, the ball machine for the dog and the whipping boy for your mother. Good grief - let him golf! He gets to hit something hard with a big metal object and no one gets hurt! He gets to NOT be in your hair driving you up the walls, monopolizing the computer buying more golf stuff on ebay!
