My top 10 comeback yearnings

it out to be. Guess what? There were women who worked then if they wanted to. Ever heard of Estee Lauder? She started her business with some counter space at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1948. The mantra of my own parents for their female brood: "Get an education". We were told we could be anything we wanted to be...even if it was to be a stay at home mom. It was our choice. We were raised with traditional values and taught to be individuals. It was a safe, secure environment.

The adage "It takes a village to raise a child" is hooey. What we've been seeing a whole lot of around the globe is children with tires full of burning gasoline around their necks, warlords using kids to mine blood diamonds, child slavery and porn. In the USA how many children are in foster homes, abandoned for one reason or other? Society is imploding under the "it takes the village" mentality by passing off family responsibly. So, it's not working!

Charity begins at home and works it way out one child at a time, one family at a time.

5. Family viewing time on TV: I'm not a prude, BUT...I shouldn't have to explain to a four year old what a "four hour erection" or "genital herpes" is while flipping through the TV. Enough with the Viva Viagra ads. That makes the old Alka-Seltzer "Plop, Plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is" look pretty good. How bout a comeback? That goes for more family friendly shows, too, some that doesn't make adults look like idiots.

6. American Dream: Please, we need a big comeback! We've lost sight of the real American Dream and substituted it with conspicuous consumption. The American Dream isn't flashy, showy toys and being in debt up to your eyeballs just so all the kids can have cells phones, and the latest Xbox. What is the American Dream? The pursuit of life, liberty and happiness...living free, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution. Yes, and the right to provide properly for our family.

7. Honesty: Do you know the statistic on people who cheat? Teachers cheat...they give kids the answers to achievement tests so their system's scores will look good. Kids cheat, parents cheat...on each other, the government and at work. Companies cheat. It's epidemic. The sad thing is a lot of people have absolutely no compunction about it. I yearn for a comeback of honesty and trustworthiness when a person's word was their word and a handshake meant something.

8. Good, decent, engaging entertainment: Some garbage that is passed off as entertainment today is almost a crime. Case in point? In no society or culture should dog fighting be considered entertainment. If this is the best a culture or society can provide their people, we're in deep caca. Teach a kid chess for goodness sake!

9. Feeling safe: Oh, how I long for a comeback for safety, not just because I've been a victim of stalking, but, how many of you feel really safe? We've gone from living in an era when we never locked our doors to having security alarms on our cars, homes and bodies! We're hacked, our identity's stolen and phished. Enough! I want to be safe!

10. Good grooming: Big comeback knocking here. No, I don't want mandatory hats, white gloves and such for women. I'm just tired of bare stomachs, butt cracks, sagging pants showing underwear, thongs and TMI, exposed bra straps, pajamas for shopping, bed head in public and dirty bare feet everywhere. There's charm is mystery. By the way, a dog is not a fashion accessory...

So, there they are ladies and gentlemen...my yearnings for 2008. Who knows what yearnings 2009 will bring.
