I do believe that there is indeed an anti-American sentiment within the country as a whole. I do think that it's down to a few different things.
1. I think that Britain is quite ashamed of our role in the 'War on Terror' and the resulting occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. I believe that blaming America for it all is both wrong and an act of cowardice from this once great country.
We supported America into this from 2002 and we should remain side-by-side until the problems are sorted out. After all, we went into Iraq and Afghanistan, torn apart their buildings and infrastructure, we have a moral obligation to continue to help them sort out what we destroyed.
2. George Bush has become a figure of ridicule within domestic and international politics. I guess he's an easy target at this present moment. I'm not a huge fan of Bush but he is the democratically elected 'Leader of the Free World' (despite what the conspiracy nuts may choose to believe). I do believe that Bush is more intelligent than the English media give him credit for.
To bash Bush is, again, slightly cowardly because it's just a convenient way of avoiding our responsibilities. I would like to believe that we can stand together with the next President and sort of the current debacle together (as our 2 supposedly great nations should do).
I think the general apathy in Britain is helping to fuel this liberal, anti-Americanism. I hope that this apathy doesn't transfer itself to domestic politics and that turnout doesn't decrease below the already worrying levels.
I would like to say, however, that the BBC is partly responsible. They do attack the American government at every possible chance and they will readily report against America rather than for another country (even our own country).
I do hope that the sentiment doesn't grow any further or the world could see another huge shift in the political landscape.
