When you compare two superheroes like Superman and Batman, the competition extends beyond their superhero alter-egos, and becomes a deeper contest between their non-super identities as well, resulting in a Clark Kent versus Bruce Wayne debate.
So where to begin. Both Superman and Batman graced our lives quite some years ago, on the pages of comics and then on the bigscreen. Both have had major blockbuster films based on these long-time popular characters and both continue to maintain popularity over the years. Although let us not forget that Batman also started out on the small screen, with the boing, kerbang action of the original Batman series.
Superman is the amazing superhero from outer space, who can fly and use his x ray vision to save damsels in distress. While he is a superhero for the masses, his rescues quite often seem focused on saving a particular pretty lady. Sure, overall his rescue attempts end us saving Metropolis, but his focus is definitely on the ladies.
Batman, on the other hand, is the dark brooding human, whose childhood memories of his parents murder have given him a taste for vengeance. With his inheritance and intelligence, he invents various contraptions that make him almost the super human being that he appears. With his gadgets, he can fly across rooftops, shoot himself to safety and catch his villains, in his fight for saving Gotham City.
Batman has the gadgets vote by far. He seems to have a different gadget for every purpose and a vehicle for every landscape, allowing him to fly through the sky or ski across water. Superman is not one for gadgets, but simply uses his super powers and incredible strength to overcome all obstacles.
When it comes to costumes, Batman wins hands down. A rubber bat suit is not only protective (although perhaps a little restrictive), but it hides the identity of this superhero well, allowing him to maintain his life as the rich and successful Bruce Wayne by day. Superman's costume is bright and probably very breathable in comparison to Batman's rubber, but why he needs to wear underpants on the outside will always be a reason for concern.
When it comes to weaknesses, the draw somewhat even. Superman loses his powers and eventually his life if exposed to Kryptonite. This seems like quite an easy way to kill a superhero really, but then again, Batman is a mere human and his mortality is what makes him weak. He can die just as easily as any other human, hence the need for the heavy duty suit.
Bruce Wayne versus Clark Kent. Well this again is an easy win for Batman. Bruce Wayne is the reserved but charming millionaire, successful and intelligent, but quite skilled at keeping his identity a secret. Clark Kent, in comparison, is the bumbling, goofy guy, always messing things up, with those big think glasses that are geeky but sexy. However, do you really believe that the people of Metropolis would not put two and two together and realise that Superman is simply Clark Kent minus the glasses. At least Batman hides half his face from onlookers.
So overall, Batman appears to be the clear winner of the superhero debate. His character is dark and spellbinding in comparison to Superman and whilst both have their strengths, overall Batman is by far the real hero. A human out to avenge mankind!
