It is estimated that over one billion people worldwide are overweight. Whether you need to lose ten pounds or one hundred, it can seem like a daunting and difficult task that requires deprivation. However, if you take things one step at a time you can get healthier without feeling overwhelmed.
Getting started on an exercise program is a great way to achieve the results you want! Here are ten tips to help you get started and accomplish your goals.
1) Start slow. You don't have to meet all your exercise goals on the first day. It is easy to burn yourself out or injure yourself if you try to do too much too soon. Listen to your body and set realistic goals for improvement.
2) Pick an activity that you enjoy! If the idea of spending your afternoon at the gym on a treadmill bores you, try an outdoor sport. You could go swimming, cycling, or even just for a long walk. Think back to the games and activities you loved as a child. Did you know that jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular workout? You can now buy weighted jump ropes, or ones that count the number of calories burned for you. If you have a gym membership, try a new piece of equipment and see how you like it. Most people are not going to stick to a program that they dread, so get excited. Do something different every day!
3) If you can afford it, hire a personal trainer. Even just a few sessions with a trainer can help you set up a weight training program that is just right for your goals. By building muscle mass you will raise your metabolism, and burn more calories even when you are at rest!
4) Get your friends involved. Do you know someone else who wants to lose weight? Why not make plans with them to go to the gym, play tennis, or go hiking? By setting an appointment with another person, you are more likely to follow through and get your workout done. Plus, it makes things more fun! Exercise does not have to be tedious. If you are the competitive type, find a friend with a similar style and make it a challenge ("I bet I can stay on this treadmill longer than you can!") Or, get your friends together and look for an organized sport to play. There are many adult leagues and classes out there that are great ways to get into shape and to meet new people!
5) Listen to your body. If you experience knee or back pain, you may need to try a lower impact activity until you shed a few pounds. Discuss your exercise program with your doctor so they can help you find something that meets any health concerns.
6) Schedule
